Taking an unconventional approach to promoting cyber security, Communications Security Establishment has spent the last three years infiltrating holiday traditions. This year’s target was a 200-year-old tradition: gingerbread houses. The focus on the holidays is built on an insight about when Canadians are most vulnerable. Almost 60% of Canadians experience a cyber security incident each year, and this number increases over the holidays. With travel, connecting to unfamiliar Wi-Fi networks, new devices, more online shopping, and an increase in scams, Canadians are more vulnerable than ever. But only 7% of Canadians think it’s likely that cyber threats will cause the loss of files, photos, or financial loss. So Banfield worked with CSE’s national cyber security public awareness campaign, Get Cyber Safe, to put cyber safety at the front and centre of holiday traditions. While the first two years of the campaign produced customized wrapping paper with cyber safe tips on the inside, re-imagined Christmas carols, and a festive yule firewall channel, this year they tackled one of the oldest, and stalest, holiday traditions: gingerbread houses.
