What happens to a country without land?
The Pacific nation of Tuvalu will be submerged by rising sea levels in a matter of decades. In a speech at COP27, Minister Simon Kofe announced his country’s radical plan for survival: Tuvalu will become the world’s first digital nation. Minister Kofe’s speech – and the accompanying campaign – marks the beginning of a long process to recreate Tuvalu virtually and preserve its culture, place, identity, and statehood status under international law. It’s an unthinkable, tragic outcome – but without immediate, global climate action, it’s the only future Tuvalu has left.
