In 2023 Australians head to the polls for their first referendum in a generation, to decide whether they should recognise First Nations people in the constitution with a Voice to Parliament.
In a direct call to action, the film seeks to impress upon Australians that the question they face in the referendum concerns the future of the nation and that the way they respond will make history. The film pairs Australia’s unofficial national anthem, Aussie icon John Farnham’s ‘You’re the Voice’ with transformative moments in Australia’s history to galvanise support for its YES campaign. Starting in the 1980s - at the time the now iconic song was released - we follow a family through the years as they witness several key moments which are now forged in Australia’s collective memory playing out on their TV screen: the 1967 referendum, the Mabo land rights decision, Australia’s America’s Cup win, the Uluru handback, Cathy Freeman’s gold medal, 1996 gun control reforms, the 2008 apology to the stolen generations and the marriage equality plebiscite. Through the changing face of this typical Australian family we see them arrive in the present with the opportunity to make history themselves by voting Yes. The film is the first commercial directed by Kaytetye man and award-winning feature film director and cinematographer, Warwick Thornton.
