Boundary Road Breweries: Lawn RadlerTop 6: November 9th 2011
The billboard was created to highlight the disputed New Zealand Intellectual Property Office trademark decision that protects DB Breweries, Monteiths Radler brand beer.
Internationally, radler (cyclist in German) dates back to the 1920s and describes a shandy-style light beer, of Bavarian origin. Radler has always been a generic name. Trademarking the word is similar to trademarking terms like Lager, Pilsner or Ale. When Boundary Road Brewery were refused permission to describe their beer as being a "radler", because of DB Breweries' trademark, they used this billboard to appeal to the court of public opinion. A lawyer's letter has been received.
