Cape Times: Heads

Zuma:
Jacob Zuma is the current deputy president of the African National Congress (ANC), South Africa’s ruling party. As a political leader he is popular among the ANC youth league, Trade Unions and being a Zulu, among the Zulu people. In 2005 his financial advisor, Shabir Shaik, was convicted of fraud, leading to Zuma’s dismissal as South Africa’s deputy president in 2005. In December 2005 he was accused of raping an HIV positive woman. The case was dismissed the following year. Zuma stated that he had had unprotected sex with the accuser, but claimed to have taken a shower afterwards to minimise his risk of HIV Aids. Zuma is currently under investigation for corruption, relating to a French arms deal. There is much media debate as to whether Zuma should be in the running to be South Africa’s next president in 2008.
