Shadow WiFi is a network of free WiFi hotspots that only operate in the shade in a campaign to help prevent skin cancer.
The first Shadow WiFi installation was set up on the Playa Agua Dulce in Peru, launched in conjunction with the Peruvian League Against Cancer. Cancer organisations in New Zealand, the USA and other Countries will be launching Shadow WiFi next as part of a global initiative. Beach-goers must be in the shade to log onto the Shadow WiFi portal and surf for free. If they move out of the shade or the shade moves as the day progresses, they lose the connection. When a user connects and logs on to the network the cancer association gets analytics on how much time they spent on the network and therefore how much time was spent in the shade. The Shadow WiFi system, developed by Happiness technologists, uses a very narrow-beam directional WiFi antenna custom-designed to deliver WiFi only to a designated shadow area. This is installed on a mega-structure providing the all-important shade on the otherwise exposed expanses of sand. A sensor tracks the movement of the sun and through bespoke software directs the antenna in the opposite direction, the shadow. The entire system calibrates itself, searches for the sun, follows it throughout the day and rotates the WiFi antenna. With this setup Happiness has created an out-of-the-box solution that can be set up by Cancer Foundations anywhere in the world without any ICT-knowledge. One in every three cancers diagnosed is a skin cancer, which is directly related to UV light exposure. That is more than 3 million people annually. As summer in the western hemisphere approaches and millions of people head for sun-kissed holidays, the message couldn’t be more relevant. Seek Shadow. Save your Skin, literally.
