Fake news is a worldwide problem. But it’s especially dangerous in the Philippines, where 92% of citizens get their news from Facebook, journalists are threatened, and there is no access to global fact-checking tools. The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines wanted to give Filipino journalists a central hub where they could share information about fake news sites. And we wanted it to have a public benefit. So we developed Fakeblok a way for journalists to report and vet fake news sites, then have posts from these sites blocked on users’ newsfeeds with a stop-and-think message from the NUJP.
