Sainath spent his initial years in advertising working with creative powerhouses in India like Contract, JWT and Ogilvy, followed by a stint with DDB in the Middle East. In early 2003, Sainath decided to throw it all up for films.
In 2005 he was handpicked by Walter Salles (the famous Brazilian director of Central Station & Motorcycle Diaries) to shoot a short film titled 'Cataract', which went on to be declared, "Winner: Talent Movie of the Week - Berlin International Film Festival 05". His other short, "Village Football" is part of the "World Cup FIFA 2006 Official Artistic & Cultural Program", Berlin; and opened the "Locarno International Film Festival 05".
Having directed advertising commercials for varied MNC's like Unilever, Toyota, Nokia, Motorola, Reliance Infocomm, Mont Blanc, Pepsi Co., for over 4 years, Sainath has recently set up his own independent commercial/film production house, Purple Vishnu Films, in January 2011
