As a result of outdated masculine stereotypes, baked into New Zealand’s culture over decades, men are reluctant to discuss their feelings or engage with mental health because it’s not seen as manly. But the reality is, it’s one of the toughest, most courageous things a man can do. Using all the tropes of stereotypical masculinity, ex Māori All Black, Slade McFarland, along with his enthusiastic hypeman, challenge New Zealand’s manhood head on. This direct challenge asks Kiwi men whether they’re 'Man enough to take on the real tough stuff', and positions engaging with their own mental health struggles, or somebody else’s, as the epitome of a masculine act.
