Breast Cancer Foundation NZ have launched their latest campaign to encourage New Zealand's most at risk women to get a mammogram. Ahi Ka, a poem written and performed by Maori youth poetry group Nga Hinepukorero, sets out to tackle a barrier to mammograms that isn’t often discussed – body shame and embarrassment – by encouraging women to adopt a te ao Maori worldview of the body.
Ahi Ka was written to encourage all women to get their mammogram, but to especially connect with wahine Māori, given their vulnerability to breast cancer. Maori women are disproportionately affected by breast cancer, with 35% percent of Maori women more likely to be diagnosed and 65% more likely to die from breast cancer than Pakeha With illustration from artist Atarangi Anderson and animation from Creature Post, this powerful performance empowers all women to honour their whakapapa by loving their breasts – and to get their mammogram.
