FIFA has failed to guarantee the safety of the LGBT+ community at the World Cup in Qatar. So, All Out organized a one month-long global protest in the Metaverse – the first of its kind. Safe, anonymous: Will future protests happen in the virtual world? Just as shiny as Qatar’s newly built infrastructure, FIFA built the FIFAWorld on the metaverse platform “Roblox.” Meanwhile, LGBT+ people are declared as “mentally defective” rainbows (even fake ones) are being confiscated from World Cup fans, and the rainbow “captain’s armband” was completely banned by FIFA. Since it’s not possible to protest in real Qatar, All Out enlisted its global network of supporters to protest in a digital Doha, and kicked off the one month protest at the start of the World Cup. Thanks to the publicly available toolkit, created by All Out partner Freundliche Grüsse, a Swiss creative agency, over two thousand people from around the world have been using our avatars to protest in the Metaverse. The protest hub and event microsite is at unplayhate.org.
