BEST AD OF THE WEEK - TV:
https://www.bestadsontv.com/news/http://bestadsontv.com/files/thumbnails/2007/Feb/5109_Anorexia.jpg

BEST TV
The film for Anorexia Bulimia Kontakt is my choice for tv idea of the week. It's simple, shocking, compelling and memorable with a razor sharp insight into the troubled minds of those who suffer from anorexia. Does the music become a little too big and melodramatic at the end? Perhaps. But this is a well-executed powerful piece of communication that lives with you well beyond the 30 seconds.

BEST PRINT/AMBIENT
The ambient floor poster for RSPCA in Melbourne is a simple visual idea brought to life in a really smart piece of environmental media. It would have made a good print ad or poster which would have been good - but not memorable. Yet this format brings the idea to life in a far more dramatic way. Which creates talk value, attracts media interest and I'm sure makes the RSPCA's probably miniscule budget go a lot further.

I must be in the mood for optical illusions this week because both my choices feature them.

My choice for TV is Belonging for Orange.
Although the brief that people are better together is a little generic, especially for a tele-communications company, the spot has been handled in a fresh, interesting and likable way. Whoever picked the music did a really nice job. The visual approach is unusual enough that it may stop a few Tivo merchants in mid fast-forward to see what they are missing.

My choice for print is the Axe Shower Gel
Im not really sure if this is print at all. But if something printed on a towel is print, then hey, be my guest.
Funny visuals, very on brand for Axe, although Im not really sure where the appropriate place to wear these towels would be (the photos seem to be set in a locker room?) But I guess not being appropriate is exactly the point, so job well done I say.

I have picked two campaigns using celebrities, in two different ways:

First in film, the Orange spot with mr Blonde is a very clever and relevant way of using famous people, in many perspecitves. Here the brand is the hero, not the famous guy. So many times it's the other way around. The agency also managed to get a complicated brief in the script in a natural way. This ad is very funny and by far my film winner this week.

In print it's a close call between 'Women's Aid' and 'Post it'. But my pick is 'Womens Aid'. Yes, we have seen fake bruises before, but not on celebrities. And it makes something happen. The copy is well written, I just ask myself what would happen without it? Again a clever and original use of famous people. 'Post It' is a nice and simple idea. But does the world have a problem with them falling off?!

"Duvet"

Not very many good campaignable ideas this week, but I think that guys around the world would hate me if I didn’t give Che Men's Magazine the top place. It’s funny, the girl is hot and it’s a great merchandising idea. 10 points to Duval Guillaume. In second place I’d go for Greenpeace’s solid idea for a mural.

As for the rest…
Mars - OK.
Carlsberg - The “if we made…” route feels a bit 90’s.
Aerial - Contrived.
Eurostar - Sperm and eggs - need I say more.

BEST AD OF THE WEEK - TV:
https://www.bestadsontv.com/news/http://bestadsontv.com/files/thumbnails/2007/Jan/4719_birdman.jpg

Birdman

The Coke spot is the winner here. Although it has a few things against it (the blacking up did feel a bit Al Jolson and it starts a bit so-so) the utter fantastic insanity of where it ends up and the charming pair of crazy leg people really wins you over by the end. Great for a big brand like this.

Some of the others were really good too. The hand shadows was lovely to watch and would really repay repeated viewings. The Creative director of Leo Burnett Sydney was spot-on about the level of execution in the Johnny Walker ad (although what it’s got to do with whisky we have no idea). J2O is beautifully shot and the Interflora ad is enjoyably strange. And since one of us is currently reading Robinson Crusoe we also enjoyed the other ad for some brand of TV, although which TV we can’t remember, and we only watched it a couple of minutes ago.

Best TV ad: Rituals

i got to tell you from frame one of the drumstick ice cream ad i was hooked. it is a real pleasure. thank you.
it's a wonderful spot.....no gratuitous A.D.D. fast cuts that you get convultions watching....
it is choreographed beautifully. shot beautifully. the song is contagious. and they even got the logo in shot 2...bet you all missed it too.

it is a very simple concept that truly jumps off the screen at you without shouting......it's what summer and memories of summer are about.
right down to the slap in the head because you were checking out the blonde in the white bikini....magic.

hats off to the team that did this.....you are going to get awards my friends....make room for them.....you deserve it..... it truly is a classic.
and if you dont get any awards....... then we are all in trouble.

Best print ad: Fight Club

overall the print was ok.....the samaritan ad reminded me of all of tom messner's(now eurorscg ny) doodles he'd leave all over his desk and the agency......now i know why he was doing it.
the school ad felt like a school ad. the brother ad felt like something i saw back in the early eighties....the mars ad was alright....

the tide and levis ads stuck out for me the most.......
the tide ad's eco message (which is embedded into the consciousness of the world right now thanks to all the planners and clients
who watched the al gore film and needed to make their products stategies "green" in some way....
(did anyone see the barrett/jackson auctions this past weekend?.....didnt see any "green" cars selling for $5 mill....)
seems provacative enough along with the impeccable art direction that really helps drive the point home.
it caught my eye.... especially after i got a $400 water bill for the last 6 months of '06........
if it can do that for the empire state bldg..... imagine what it could do for the "duet" washer and dryer we just had to have?

and that leaves my favorite ...
the levis ad.....i guess this ad just hit home for me......
there is nothing in the world.... more worth fighting over, than a beautiful woman in tight jeans......my wife included.
(after she washes them in tide of course ; )
until next time

Best TV ad: Idiots

Comments: Many times we consider idiots are those who drink to get drunk, especially at times like Christmas and new year. Actually, we saw them walking dizzily, doing some bullshit in discos and pubs, puking in taxis ... and on their own clothes, bothering people everywhere and things like that. Last Christmas I drank three whiskies and I came home by car ... and I didn’t consider myself an idiot until I saw this commercial. Congratulations to everyone involved - it’s a good ad to stop drink driving.

Comments: The idea is quiet simple but is executed with outstanding, high quality photos and retouching. The next time that I need to send something, definitively DHL will be my choice. “Nothing stops us” is a great concept, in fact, I can imagine the TV spots, so please send them to me, & if you haven’t done them, come on guys, it’s time! “Nothing stops us” - also is a concept that we can use in advertising to reach our goals. There was nothing particularly stinky in the TV category. There were lots of solid ideas and good production, but my favorite was the Arnet Broadband spots. While I enjoyed watching the segments, they also did a good job of branding and centered the campaign around a product offer. The agency understood the box they were in and managed to turn a tough assignment into memorable advertising. And I thought bald jokes were overdone and annoying…

The print is even tougher to judge. Lot’s of nice stuff. Although I loved the Carlsberg wall chart and applaud the beauty of the Onitsuka Tiger execution, I have to give my vote to Kipsta for the Stadium ad. It is simple and smart in a category where I thought every ad humanly possible had been done.

Lots to look at here, but not lots to choose from. It was a week of visually interesting, big production stuff, but the ideas suffered. I’ve learned plenty though. Mr. Potato Head never gets old, The Qashqai were originally quite nomadic in nature and if you need lots of people in an ad, go to Buenos Aires.

I liked two ads. If it were based on arresting visuals or music alone, I would have picked the Rexona “dolls” spot. I couldn’t stop watching. But the stronger idea was in the Centraal Beheer spot. It’s well acted and directed. The joke is directly related to the product. And it’s the only one I laughed at.

I had a harder time deciding on the print. I would have to pick the Sunsense Anti-Ageing Lotion ad. It’s smart. I understand what it’s trying to sell me. I would find it hard to look past this ad in a newspaper. It’s a bit of a gimmicky device but an appropriate one, only the transparency of the paper is going to let this idea come to life.

I really enjoyed the Imaginary Guide spot, and the simplicity of the Comedy Central idea - as well as the Firenza Tyres print. I think all the work passes the Hollywood log-line test that keeps concepts simple - that is - the idea is so clear it can be described in a single sentence . It was lovely to see a mobile phone manufacturer that doesn't spend time telling and showing me all the things I can do with a mobile. Motorola has really understood that a mobile phone ad needs to be as entertaining as an ad for blue jeans or beer.

The razor ad ended up being my favourite. Just ahead of the antismoking ad from Crispin.

At first site the bestadsontv selection was almost too easy. I mean, the new Sony Bravia spot by Jonathon Glazer and Fallon London had already passed over my desk and in my opinion is even better than the bouncing balls spot. On viewing all selections though the Dove spot from Ogilvy in Toronto gave me pause for second thoughts. But in the end it remained second to Sony Bravia..simply inspired.

The print selection wasn’t as straight forward as the TV this week. Having said that, there was an obvious champion in Stella Artois. A highly ambitious piece of structural engineering with the effect of adding prestige and engagement to a well developed global brand.

TV

The weirdo in both of us wanted to go with Eat Like Snake, but in our estimation, there was a stronger idea somewhere else - the Let The Cat Out spot for Parkinson’s. Why? With any PSA, you need to summon up some kind of emotion – disgust, horror, pathos... Well, this one served up the guilt marvelously. We found ourselves getting frustrated listening to the prattling old bugger, but then when we realized the ad was for Parkinson’s, we almost found ourselves wanting to organize a telethon. Very simple idea based on a reality of the disease that went beyond the simple “forgetfulness” angle. Nicely directed too.

Hmm, where to start? Let’s put it this way – we don’t think there’s anything here that’s going to be showing up in D&AD. That being said, we suppose we have to pick something. So, we’re going to go with the old “everyone loves a Monkey” adage and pick the Strip Waxing Studio ad as this week’s winner. There’s a well-exploited insight that guys with hairy backs, chests and, ahem, asses feel like they’re a lot closer connected to their Neanderthal roots than they’d like to be. Yes, we’ve seen the “list/prices” technique once or twice before (tip of the hat to MasterCard here), but the ad made us smile. Damn those monkeys!

BEST AD OF THE WEEK TV.

https://www.bestadsontv.com/news/http://www.bestadsontv.com/files/thumbnails/2006/Sep/3594_snowbl4.jpg
TV this week was judged quite simply by which ad bore repeat viewing. I watched Fallon Minneapolis’ Snowball Spot four times in a row. Although almost ruined by the cheesy ‘roll with anything’ pun at the end… sweet casting, a contrasting whimsical track and Dante Ariola’s annoyingly talented direction produced a lovely all rounder (hey, the other team started with the puns… blame them). The old Scooby Doo human snowball, eh? Good to see all those years watching cartoons haven’t gone to waste. Sony ‘Balls’ it ‘aint, but Pick of the Week it is.

The DDB Melbourne spot for ANZ got a second viewing. Great casting and I laughed both times. Everything else only got the quick once through. I suspect the five day shoot for New Zealand Tourism was its own reward however for the lucky creatives from Ogilvy.

The print was judged by sheer impact… after viewing them all, which ad stayed with me after I’d gone to make a cup of tea? Unfortunately Marmite was the only one. An original, engaging and funny idea, it stands out a mile within the group. It’ll do the same amongst competing ads in a magazine or on neighbouring billboards.

The only problem is it was done by the guys in the office next door to mine so I’ll pick a runner up. Publicis Conseil’s ad for Stihl has the seed of an interesting idea (no pun intended this time) although I’d like to have seen it executed more dramatically.

Now although I enjoyed the splendour of the Vic. Tourism spot more, my vote has to go to the Crispin offering. Its a nice little spot but link through to the Snapalope website and you have a fine example of the integrated thinking that makes them great and creates a world for Slim Jim. Reconstituted meat reconstituted as an animal again and then hunted for meat yeah, thats cool.

(On a side note: I found it absurd that in a country where the majority of people dont have electricity, and subsequently TV, the guys from BBDO Cape Town think they can then sell candles using the media. Bad rationale guys.)

The ever wonderful Ivan Zacharias does it again with this spot for Nike featuring Maria Sharipova. (Now that's a tough opening sentence, spelling wise.) The ad captures the weird contradiction at the heart of this super star - she looks like a supermodel but hits the ball like a grizzly bear on steroids. The sugary track is given a great twist by the jealous, hooded eyed peformers. It's left field, memorable, well shot and captures the essence of her. Game, set and match.

Some funny TV ads this week. I love the sheer campness of Hoff Central. Fredrik Bond’s direction of the Hummer spot is pretty faultless too. But for me, Crispin’s ‘Stuff of Legends’ comes out tops. Bavaria Beer ‘Squid’

Not in the same league as the TV ads this week. As posters, I like the impact of the Aussie animals wrapped up for winter for Castlemaine, but that kind of thing has been done a lot for Extra Cold beers. So I’m going to go for the KesselsKramer ‘Giant Squid’ ad for Bavaria beer. The use of consecutive right hand pages isn’t exactly fresh, but the ‘50’s illustration style is. I also like any ads that take the piss out of macho beer culture.

As with women's breast ads, so it's cool to know that we can have the same problems, and that we can solve them. Coke is not a new idea, but so well executed ( it makes me think about the animation film "robots"), and so while it's new for Coke, it's not so new in onirism ( honda did it some years ago and everybody , with money, does the same). Really Good film, but I prefer the Balls. Best film: the balls.

And there is no more watchable ad on TV at the moment than the Lynx "Billions" ad. Don't know why, it just has something.

Again, in print, two executions stood out. The BBC World ' See both sides' execution is a clever use of the corner poster site. But for me, it's another win for Lynx with their 'World Cup contract'. Although there is a suggestion that this may have been influenced by an email that was circulating recently, it is a snug fit with the brand's tone of voice.

BESTAD OF THE WEEK

 GUEST JUDGE /BEST AD OF THE WEEK   UK    June 28, 2006 08:29 (Edited: February 17, 2023 04:19)

Clive Pickering, head of copy, TBWA/London, will be this week's guest judge. Clive will be choosing the "bestad of the week" from last week's featured TV & print /outdoor.

Just back from Cannes where I was exposed to the best work in the world and a small brewerys annual output of ale, so Im not necessarily in the best state to give a well-rounded, considered judgement of the weeks ads. On the other hand, maybe it will help. Anyway, here goes..

The 6 ads under the banner TV cover a wide range of Cannes categories. Here we have content, idents, an event, charity ads, and even straightforward conventional TV advertising. This makes it all but impossible to judge them against each other, but I think the power of the anti-prostitution ad shades it for me. Not sure about the bet youre feeling stupid now approach to the line, but the idea is strong and the execution good.

bestad of the week PRINT / OUTDOOR:

Of the print ads, the Socceroos campaign was a good thought, once Id figured out that the bloke was the personification of History. But the Jo-burg zoo ads won it for me, simply and cheekily putting across the news that the zoo is open at night. Its not a classic campaign [partly because there are only two ads] but it stood out from the rest.

Each week we'll be asking a Creative Director or prominent creative ... from somewhere in the world ... to choose the bestad from last week's TV & PRINT/OUTDOOR.

To kick it off, here's Jae Goodman, Co-ECD Publicis & Hal Riney San Francisco. He's the one on the right in the pic (with Co-ECD Jon Soto on the left).

Jae Goodman: c'mon, who doesn't love a musical? so that made this a tough week with both rexona and folgers in the mix (and the other rexona spot was almost a musical). but it's folgers for me. it just had the right sensibility (if you can call it that) - the glowing sunshine folgers people were wonderfully perfectly creepy and annoying - just like real people who for some awful reason are legitimately happy to greet each day.

a good week though. black balloons really made me think.

Jae Goodman: okay, weird mix. the aids thing is disturbing, which is the point, i know. and as for the ad world cup - i actually think some of those "terrible" ads would make great ads - so damned honest. it's a smart way to call bullshit on what all of us do for a living. but i'm going with whiskas for my favorite. i usually don't go for the visual gags, but i just know my childhood cat, porky, was all hunter on the inside.
