Alas Chiquitanas: Bridge

Top 6: March 9th 2022
Bolivia is once again in the eye of the hurricane for not stopping the clandestine construction of a bridge in time at the hands of a group of Mennonites, who bought a 14,400-hectare plot of land in 2021 in the municipality of Charagua, Santa Cruz. The property adjoins the Anmi Kaa-Iya National Park and most of the land is within the Isoso wetlands, an internationally owned Ramsar site.
Agency: Humano

The purchase was made to create a new colony and deforest a large part of the Chaco forest. The Parapedí river was in the way of deforesting the property, but it was not an impediment since they built a 150-meter steel bridge without requesting permission from the state, or having environmental impact studies.

The bridge opened 3 months ago to put machinery and deforest without control.
To date, more than 3,000 hectares have been destroyed and 18.5 km of roads.

Deforestation does not stop and the Kaa-Iya park and the Isoso wetlands, assets for the health of America and the planet, are at risk.

Together with Alas Chiquitanas, an NGO of volunteers who are activists for nature, we created this campaign to make the problem visible and ensure that the bridge is dismantled.
