 GUEST JUDGE /BEST AD OF THE WEEK   WORLDWIDE    June 04, 2024 17:18 (Edited: June 05, 2024 03:18)
BEST TV
Winner: Clash of Clans 'Available Players'. I love Haaland taking over as the Barbarian King in Clash of Clans. It's a great idea and a fresh, modern way of doing partnerships. This is an idea about the players that haven't been chosen to be in the game. Ronaldinho and Aguero have featured and this execution features Ronaldo the First as he calls himself. I prefer the moniker R9 or the original Ronaldo but I digress. Ronaldo famously spent time at WPP some years ago which clearly hasn't improved his acting performance in any way, it's awful. But he has a warm charm and he's a proper legend so he gets away with it.

Runner up: Heineken Silver 'World-Class Bubs'. I've never seen a single Wolverine movie so I've never heard of the metallic substance Dead Pool has stolen from his claws to make the beer cans. This however didn't diminish my understanding or enjoyment. It's tough to go wrong with Dead Pool as he's such a brilliant character. The ad is all neatly tied together with the line "all the taste, no bitter ending" which is nice, if not a little familiar.

BEST OUTDOOR
Winner: TADA 'On Fire'. Cold beers being delivered fast by a driver on a bike - what's not to love. Oh, they're on fire... awesome. You couldn't get away with this in the UK, so it stood out to me as a pretty memorable stunt.

Runner Up: A.C Camargo Center 'UV Referee'. More heat related business here. This one's a neat innovation gimmick. The ref's whistle-like design is a nice idea and its wearability is sweet too. It would work well, certainly in the short term.

BEST INTERACTIVE
Winner: Motion Sickness 'Design Translator'. This is ace. It plays from a brilliant truth of the jargon we speak but of also the difficulty we have understanding one another. It's funny and brave to do this and says heaps about those behind it. I believe they're fun and honest and straight talking. And you can tell by their site and the work on it that they're fucking brilliant at what they do. Nice job Motion Sickness.

Runner Up: Vodka Cruiser 'Hex Your Ex'. This is fun and engaging and bang on brand. Not enough brands embrace work like this. I'm sure the audience loved it. The idea of casting a spell on an ex is great. The idea of entering the promo with something an ex left behind is even better.

This week's guest judge is Andy Jex, chief creative officer at TBWA London.

"You're from Enfield. You should be putting up the adverts, not writing them" said Andy's Mum many moons ago.

Despite his mum's early doubt Andy is now the CCO at TBWA London where he's helping bring disruptive thinking to brands that include Mcvities, Hilton, Starbucks, Ginsters and adidas.

Having started at DDB, Andy spent formative years at Fallon and Mother before becoming joint ECD at Saatchi & Saatchi alongside partner Rob Potts. Creating entertaining and populist work along the way for Walkers, Marmite, BBC, Sony, Coca Cola, Stella Artois, Direct Lline, EE, Toyota, Lidl and Carlsberg. With the "dehydrated-noodle-double" being a notable highlight when he managed to create iconic work for both Pot Noodle AND Supernoodles.

During this time he's won 24 Lions at Cannes and 19 pencils at D&AD, except the award he's most proud of is this recognition from his Mum:

"I hate adverts. Apart from the adverts Andy does" she said very recently.
