BEST TVWinner: TAB '
Australia's National Sport Is...' Some great spots this week. With TAB just rising to the top. A brilliantly directed spot, which captures the latent passion and indignation of a nation. The filmic spiral offers an enjoyable outlet for all the tension felt out there, as the Australian population wrestles for which sport is best. A great cultural insight. Great casting, good script and nice directorial touches places this at the top. Chapeaux.
Runner up: Stagecoach '
Bussed It, Bossed It'. Bussed it, Bossed it. So close to number one spot. Cannot get this out of my head now. Excellent advertising. Again, great casting, great track and I love the idea of raising stage coach travel to the top of the tree. Embraced the weird, and it worked. Great stuff. Bossed it.
BEST PRINTWinner: Brekkies '
Dog Teeth'. I'm not really sure I understood the back story to this ad, but I felt a personal connection. My late grandmother looked like a different person for a week once. We figured out she had been wearing someone else's false teeth from the nursing home. Sad but true, and it hit a nerve, so anything in this space was always gonna do well.
Runner Up: Four Paws '
Suicide Keyboards'. Quite a specific and difficult issue to deal with. But an important one. And any comms which makes people think before they tap is a good one.
BEST OUTDOOR Winner: Victoria Bitter '
English Bitter'. It's always good to harness cultural energy when you can. And there was a lot of it around when Australia 'did what they did' in the Ashes. Great idea to embrace it, and a typically funny and self-aware integrated outdoor campaign. Big props cheeky Monkeys.
Runner Up: Samsung '
Big News'. I'm a big fan of the miniature. So liked very much this mini outdoor on the big outdoor to pronounce the enviable pocket size of the new Samsung. A mini well done to you.
BEST INTERACTIVEWinner: Ikea '
Empty Showroom Contest'. You always know it's gonna be good when you like the title of the ad. And I'm a big fan of oxymorons. Empty showroom sounds intriguing, and did a hard working job in a tough category.
Runner up: EE '
Capture The Store'. It's amazing how many millions of people spend their time watching others play video games. And it's always smart to tap into and facilitate these movements if you can. Clever way to use an interactive billboard at a shopping centre. Good stuff.
This week's guest judge is Rob Doubal, joint chief creative officer at McCann London and UK, and one of this year's jury presidents at Cannes Lions.
Having blazed a trail at hot shops Mother London and Wieden+Kennedy London with long-term partner Lolly Thomson, Rob and Lolly took over the reins of McCann London in 2012 as ECD's and then CCO's of the UK in 2014. Since then, they have won over 100 Cannes Lions, seen McCann London placed in the Top 10 Agencies in the world, been voted the Most Creative Agency in London and ranked annually amongst the UK's top creatives. They remain angered by their own achievements and far from satisfied creatively - but love reviewing other people's excellent work on the Best Ads on TV.
