GUEST JUDGE: GUY MOORE, CREATIVE DIRECTOR, LEO BURNETT LONDON

 GUEST JUDGE /BEST AD OF THE WEEK    September 12, 2007 04:11 (Edited: February 17, 2023 05:19)
https://www.bestadsontv.com/news/upload/guymoore%20copy2.jpg
Guy Moore reviews last week's Best TV and Best Print. (To view the work, click on the Archives at left).

In TV my favourite is Harvey Nichols Foodmarket 'Backstage' I really like this ad, for a start I thought why am I watching this, a goat vomiting into a urinal, a hen tapping a few lines of cocaine, lots of lovely beautiful women and a typical camp organiser. Very beautifully shot, great observations and touches, very David LaChappelle. The end punch line is great, Harvey Nichols now has a food store. BMP once again at its best.
Then in no particular order are my comments on the rest of the TV.
Cadbury Dairy Milk 'Gorilla' Instead of the typical woman having an orgasm on a sofa as she indulges in chocolate they choose a gorilla playing drums. Very brave, very mad, very different for a very tough category.
Buenos Aires Zoo 'Yawn' A sweet little film that was the
perfect time length to get over the message.
AT&T 'Another battle' Nice concept, I'd have liked to have
seen more, but the ending obviously ate into time.
Anti-litter 'Walk like a duck' In principle this commercial showed all the signs of being a good one, I feel it needed more money to give it justice.
Vodafone 'Time theft' An obvious concept but with good editing, good music, and great touches it rises above all other mobile phone ads.
OK. Now onto press.
My favourite without a shadow of a doubt is for Bazooka bubble gum 'Air Bag' Very simple, very funny. As a kid Bazzoka was the best at blowing bubbles and it gave you jaw ache into the bargain. You can't get a big bubble with Juicy Fruit. Also the poor kid is going to spend several hours trying to dislodge it from his eyebrows. Oh happy days!
Amnesty International 'Man hole sticker' Very powerful and would stop anyone in their tracks.
Lolane Head Up Styling 'Punk' Very arresting as a piece of art direction. I hope there were others in the series as it makes for a great campaign.
Florida Coalition against Human Trafficking 'Girls' A deftly handled piece of communication that doesn't bear thinking about.
Land Rover 'Tackle Pads' All Land Rover ads are good, but I must admit this isn't quite in the league of the Masai warriors.
Sky TV Crime and Investigation Channel 'Inside their minds' What a great brief. Sadly the visual seems far too familiar and somewhat lazy.

https://www.bestadsontv.com/news/http://bestadsontv.com/files/thumbnails/2007/Aug/7945_billboards.jpg

We're suckers for a vignette ad, and particularly ones with Gene Wilder singing Willy Wonka songs, so we were very fortunate this week that the good folks at bestadsontv happened to come up trumps. Here we have an ad for sky movies showing how nice it is when things aren't interrupted by ads. A bit of an odd dichotomy for people who write ads for a living, in fact we probably shouldn't really have chosen it as best in show. never mind, it's still a very worthy winner. Lovely.

We liked the idea of the Stella "innovative brand experience", but without actually being able to experience it, we couldnt really award it this weeks best. However, it did sound very interesting so we gave it third place. It was down to two, Suicide versus Eurostar. After a lengthy discussion we decided that the Eurostar ad was a funny image, but ultimately it made us feel a bit sick, so awarded it second place. Therefore, we decided the Suicide Prevention Centre campaign should be this weeks bestadsonawall. A very clever piece of visual communication and the most creative thing this week. Marvelous.

BEST AD OF THE WEEK - TV:
https://www.bestadsontv.com/news/http://bestadsontv.com/files/thumbnails/2007/Jul/7893_arnet.jpg

TV

There were a lot of brilliantly produced spots this week, but I'd have to say my favourite was the one that cost the least to produce (at least 1/100th less than the others). The Arnet spot is an absolutely absurd idea right down to the first-time-iMovie-user-generated execution. It gave me a pretty good chuckle. And how can you not like Irene Cara?

My vote for best print this week would definitely go to the Jornal Da Tarde Classified work. Itâs brilliant. So incredibly simple and engaging. It was an excellent idea to take what would normally be a pretty mundane and stale execution in print/online out into the ambient space, so I hope that's where it stayed. Well done.

Shit, I just saw the Sony ads for Cybershot, and I have to say they are sweet. Sweet like California sweet, it more or less means really good. When it comes to selling a camera and the memories and the fotos and all that stuff, it is very hard to do. These are so clever in many ways. I've tried it (with mild success). I take my Panama hat of to you guys, that is if I actually wore one. Magnificos.

The big budget beautifully animated piece from coke or the simple well executed Hydro spot? The coke work is very entertaining, well crafted with amazing animation. But, I chose the Norwegian Hydro commercial for this week's best, it's charming. For entertainment value and surprise it was the more unexpected of the two.

BEST AD OF THE WEEK - TV:

TV
I got home just in time to review this week's ads with my daughter Nastassja, before putting her to bed. Apart from jumping up and down on the table and trying to sit on my PowerBook, she was pretty focused. Her favourite was the MTV donkey trying to save the planet (very funny). I quite liked the Amstel Light ad, which made me laugh and Nastassja clap.

However, the best of the bunch has to be Barnardo's - 'Never give up' because the message has clarity and the acting conviction. It's not about the swearing, it's about the subtext. Also, last week I came across the press ad in the Metro and I actually brought it into work and showed a few people because I thought it was so restrained and brilliantly simple. And yes I did text the number and it would be great if everyone reading this did too (Text BELIEVE to 84862).

PRINT
I must confess when I viewed this work Nastassja was getting a bit restless (it was way past her bedtime), which meant focusing on some print advertising was not really a priority. If an ad was going to get my attention it had better be fucking quick and be saying something worth listening to. Then I saw the Rock Trust ad about childhood memories.

This ad works on so many levels. Emotionally it's spot on. Visually it tells so many different stories and triggers so many different insights into a child's quality of life. For me however, the thing I like most about this ad is, intentionally or not, it says that sometimes a child's life, on the surface, can often seem perfectly normal and in many ways triumphant but in reality be utterly horrid. (Text ROCK to 84858 to donate £3).

I'm afraid Nastasja didn't think much of it though. She fell asleep. Contented. Alright for some.

Paul Foulkes, ECD Goodby Silverstein & Partners , will be this week's guest judge. Paul will be choosing the "bestad of the week" from last week's featured TV & print /outdoor. (It had to happen at some stage ... Paul has to review some of his own work!)

BEST AD OF THE WEEK - TV:

TV:

It was a good week for tv work. There are a lot of big ideas and bold executions here. Focus 12, Ford, Got Milk, HSBC, Microsoft - all the work really pulled me in and made me eager for the payoff. But only the Ask.com spot actually made me do something. I'm not sure it all makes sense to me or if there should be some bridge between the work and the site but the spots did get me to the site. And they did make me want to see where this all goes. I'm guessing the work extends into other media in ways that are just as interesting and compelling.

PRINT:

Wow. How do you vote for yourself without seeming like a jerk? Who's idea was it for me to judge this week anyway? There are some cool ads this week with some interesting thinking, but I'm going to have to vote for the Comcast Welcome to Ch1 print. Relaunching a client's product, Video On Demand, as a fully branded television station with tv spots, station ids, print, interactive and an on-air news team seems like a big idea to me. And I love the illustration. What a jerk.

BEST AD OF THE WEEK - INTERACTIVE

INTERACTIVE:

There's no winning for me here. Three entries from Goodby. I'm bound to piss someone off. But I have to go with the Got Milk site. I'd be a lying liar if I said I wasn't jealous. It's mind blowing. I've never seen a site this beautiful. There are some other fun and engaging sites here but nothing touches Gettheglass.com.

BEST AD OF THE WEEK - TV:
https://www.bestadsontv.com/news/http://bestadsontv.com/files/thumbnails/2007/Mar/5775_discovery.jpg

BEST TV
Good and simple is hard to come up with, tough to sell and brave to buy. Brokeback Mountain, Discovery and Roller-coaster should all be applauded then for making it out alive. For me the most refreshing execution though, was Discovery. Surprising, rewarding, educating and fun. I want to watch the channel.

BEST PRINT
The WWF image is clever, but ends there. Lookey-likey fails to provoke me into taking any action. The better Irish Radio station piece reignites the power of radio in my mind and makes me want to tune in.

BEST AD OF THE WEEK - TV:

https://www.bestadsontv.com/news/http://bestadsontv.com/files/thumbnails/2007/Mar/5638_Law of Gravity.jpg
Best TV:

Ok.... A squirrel 'ice farting' to put out a forest fire appeals to me on so many levels. As does the execution which was beautifully handled. Unfortunately for them they are in the same week as the 'Law of Gravity' milk campaign. Not only is this unusual and irreverent with a beautiful execution, it ties back into a strong strategy of bone strength. It's one thing to take people on a fantastic journey as long as they end up in the right place. In this case that's a place where the law of gravity isn't that strict. Nice one.

BEST AD OF THE WEEK - PRINT/ OUTDOOR

https://www.bestadsontv.com/news/http://bestadsontv.com/files/print/2007/Mar/tn_5607_AxeBath.jpg
Best print:

Print was tough. Clemenger Wellington always do different and interesting things with outdoor and this is no exception. The Red Cross work and the casino were also great examples of using the media differently. In the end though I went for the Axe ad. It's simple, clever, and new in a category we've all seen great work in before. Definitely raises the bar.

TV
Deciding TV wasn't as simple as we first thought it would be. Choosing the winner came down to following heart, not head. So although we wanted to choose HP sauce for its strategic insight, Altoids gets our vote. When the punchline was delivered, it was unexpected, subtle and funny in a "We've got to email this to all our friends" sort of way.

Print/Outdoor
We really liked the Ariel outdoor, but we liked the Surfrider foundation press ad more. The message is clear, the art direction is beautiful and for once, the lack of using injured or dead animals to promote a cleaner environment is refreshing.

We would like to reward "The coin-operated scientist". This campaign unveils the destination of our money as regards donations and charities. It establishes a direct link between the donor and the foundation, allowing us to see the effects directly. BEST AD OF THE WEEK - TV:

BEST TV
The film for Anorexia Bulimia Kontakt is my choice for tv idea of the week. It's simple, shocking, compelling and memorable with a razor sharp insight into the troubled minds of those who suffer from anorexia. Does the music become a little too big and melodramatic at the end? Perhaps. But this is a well-executed powerful piece of communication that lives with you well beyond the 30 seconds.

BEST PRINT/AMBIENT
The ambient floor poster for RSPCA in Melbourne is a simple visual idea brought to life in a really smart piece of environmental media. It would have made a good print ad or poster which would have been good - but not memorable. Yet this format brings the idea to life in a far more dramatic way. Which creates talk value, attracts media interest and I'm sure makes the RSPCA's probably miniscule budget go a lot further.

I must be in the mood for optical illusions this week because both my choices feature them.

My choice for TV is Belonging for Orange.
Although the brief that people are better together is a little generic, especially for a tele-communications company, the spot has been handled in a fresh, interesting and likable way. Whoever picked the music did a really nice job. The visual approach is unusual enough that it may stop a few Tivo merchants in mid fast-forward to see what they are missing.

My choice for print is the Axe Shower Gel
Im not really sure if this is print at all. But if something printed on a towel is print, then hey, be my guest.
Funny visuals, very on brand for Axe, although Im not really sure where the appropriate place to wear these towels would be (the photos seem to be set in a locker room?) But I guess not being appropriate is exactly the point, so job well done I say.

I have picked two campaigns using celebrities, in two different ways:

First in film, the Orange spot with mr Blonde is a very clever and relevant way of using famous people, in many perspecitves. Here the brand is the hero, not the famous guy. So many times it's the other way around. The agency also managed to get a complicated brief in the script in a natural way. This ad is very funny and by far my film winner this week.

In print it's a close call between 'Women's Aid' and 'Post it'. But my pick is 'Womens Aid'. Yes, we have seen fake bruises before, but not on celebrities. And it makes something happen. The copy is well written, I just ask myself what would happen without it? Again a clever and original use of famous people. 'Post It' is a nice and simple idea. But does the world have a problem with them falling off?!

"Duvet"

Not very many good campaignable ideas this week, but I think that guys around the world would hate me if I didn’t give Che Men's Magazine the top place. It’s funny, the girl is hot and it’s a great merchandising idea. 10 points to Duval Guillaume. In second place I’d go for Greenpeace’s solid idea for a mural.

As for the rest…
Mars - OK.
Carlsberg - The “if we made…” route feels a bit 90’s.
Aerial - Contrived.
Eurostar - Sperm and eggs - need I say more.

Birdman

The Coke spot is the winner here. Although it has a few things against it (the blacking up did feel a bit Al Jolson and it starts a bit so-so) the utter fantastic insanity of where it ends up and the charming pair of crazy leg people really wins you over by the end. Great for a big brand like this.

Some of the others were really good too. The hand shadows was lovely to watch and would really repay repeated viewings. The Creative director of Leo Burnett Sydney was spot-on about the level of execution in the Johnny Walker ad (although what it’s got to do with whisky we have no idea). J2O is beautifully shot and the Interflora ad is enjoyably strange. And since one of us is currently reading Robinson Crusoe we also enjoyed the other ad for some brand of TV, although which TV we can’t remember, and we only watched it a couple of minutes ago.

Best TV ad: Rituals

i got to tell you from frame one of the drumstick ice cream ad i was hooked. it is a real pleasure. thank you.
it's a wonderful spot.....no gratuitous A.D.D. fast cuts that you get convultions watching....
it is choreographed beautifully. shot beautifully. the song is contagious. and they even got the logo in shot 2...bet you all missed it too.

it is a very simple concept that truly jumps off the screen at you without shouting......it's what summer and memories of summer are about.
right down to the slap in the head because you were checking out the blonde in the white bikini....magic.

hats off to the team that did this.....you are going to get awards my friends....make room for them.....you deserve it..... it truly is a classic.
and if you dont get any awards....... then we are all in trouble.

Best print ad: Fight Club

overall the print was ok.....the samaritan ad reminded me of all of tom messner's(now eurorscg ny) doodles he'd leave all over his desk and the agency......now i know why he was doing it.
the school ad felt like a school ad. the brother ad felt like something i saw back in the early eighties....the mars ad was alright....

the tide and levis ads stuck out for me the most.......
the tide ad's eco message (which is embedded into the consciousness of the world right now thanks to all the planners and clients
who watched the al gore film and needed to make their products stategies "green" in some way....
(did anyone see the barrett/jackson auctions this past weekend?.....didnt see any "green" cars selling for $5 mill....)
seems provacative enough along with the impeccable art direction that really helps drive the point home.
it caught my eye.... especially after i got a $400 water bill for the last 6 months of '06........
if it can do that for the empire state bldg..... imagine what it could do for the "duet" washer and dryer we just had to have?

and that leaves my favorite ...
the levis ad.....i guess this ad just hit home for me......
there is nothing in the world.... more worth fighting over, than a beautiful woman in tight jeans......my wife included.
(after she washes them in tide of course ; )
until next time

Comments: Many times we consider idiots are those who drink to get drunk, especially at times like Christmas and new year. Actually, we saw them walking dizzily, doing some bullshit in discos and pubs, puking in taxis ... and on their own clothes, bothering people everywhere and things like that. Last Christmas I drank three whiskies and I came home by car ... and I didn’t consider myself an idiot until I saw this commercial. Congratulations to everyone involved - it’s a good ad to stop drink driving.

There was nothing particularly stinky in the TV category. There were lots of solid ideas and good production, but my favorite was the Arnet Broadband spots. While I enjoyed watching the segments, they also did a good job of branding and centered the campaign around a product offer. The agency understood the box they were in and managed to turn a tough assignment into memorable advertising. And I thought bald jokes were overdone and annoying…

Lots to look at here, but not lots to choose from. It was a week of visually interesting, big production stuff, but the ideas suffered. I’ve learned plenty though. Mr. Potato Head never gets old, The Qashqai were originally quite nomadic in nature and if you need lots of people in an ad, go to Buenos Aires.

I liked two ads. If it were based on arresting visuals or music alone, I would have picked the Rexona “dolls” spot. I couldn’t stop watching. But the stronger idea was in the Centraal Beheer spot. It’s well acted and directed. The joke is directly related to the product. And it’s the only one I laughed at.

I had a harder time deciding on the print. I would have to pick the Sunsense Anti-Ageing Lotion ad. It’s smart. I understand what it’s trying to sell me. I would find it hard to look past this ad in a newspaper. It’s a bit of a gimmicky device but an appropriate one, only the transparency of the paper is going to let this idea come to life.

BEST AD OF THE WEEK - TV:

Some serious production time spent on that there Nissan spot, but this week we'll go it on the cheap and pick the Tetley's Bitter ad. No harm done when taking the mick out of the Mentos-Coke experiment and capitalizing on the viral fun fest that's been going on lately.

Not an easy one to pick this week. We don't think there was anything that slapped either of us round the back of the head. Having said that though, we did quite enjoy the EDF Environmental stuff. Nice clean art direction too.

BROADCAST:
All the spots this week were good, but only the “Eye” spot for Zune really stood out. It was less like a traditional TV spot and more like a short film. I love that 72andSunny enlisted artists to create experimental short films inspired by Zune. The campaign gives the digital media player a much more interesting personality than iPod. Check out the films on zune-arts.net.

The work for STIHL chain saws is a beautifully crafted campaign. The concepts are simple and tap into male bravado. They’re perfectly executed with exquisite photography. I especially like the teeter-totter ad.

Imaginary Guide
(followed closely by Remington)

I really enjoyed the Imaginary Guide spot, and the simplicity of the Comedy Central idea - as well as the Firenza Tyres print. I think all the work passes the Hollywood log-line test that keeps concepts simple - that is - the idea is so clear it can be described in a single sentence . For imaginary guide "A person in an unfamiliar city has the feeling someone is there with them helping them navigate a city." For Anti Speed "The faster you go the more screwed up you could get."

The "Soccer Star" tv spot for the Minority Forum is definitely my favourite. A fresh, simple and memorable idea very well executed. It makes you think in an unpredictable way. 1-0 to Duval Guillaume.

As usual DDB Paris delivers a remarkable print ad for Nike. A graphic idea that literally jumps out of the page. My second choice is the ad for White Glo by BBDO Singapore. This week is clearly the illustrators' week.

Ummmmmmmm. Now this is tough. Orange is doing some very interesting and different stuff around the world and we want to like the ‘Hide & Seek’ socks ad but we’re not exactly sure what it’s saying. The Animals ad is another big and solid ad from Amex but purely from an animation perspective, we’d have to say that the Music ad from Jupiter Drawing Room is our pick. Although it does finish wierdly.

We are spoilt for choice when it comes to print. The Snickers ‘It’s what you’d want’ campaign for Halloween is a great insight, the Greenpeace idea is very unexpected and the Football Resistance is a fantastic and simple visual. But for us, we identified with the Wrangler Basic Cut campaign - mainly because evolution hasn’t been kind to us.

It was lovely to see a mobile phone manufacturer that doesn't spend time telling and showing me all the things I can do with a mobile. Motorola has really understood that a mobile phone ad needs to be as entertaining as an ad for blue jeans or beer.

The razor ad ended up being my favourite. Just ahead of the antismoking ad from Crispin.

The print selection had a bit of the "Brazillians did this a few years ago" over it which made me pick the Citroen ad from Euro RSCG here in Amsterdam. It's got a simple message and the execution is lovely.

At first site the bestadsontv selection was almost too easy. I mean, the new Sony Bravia spot by Jonathon Glazer and Fallon London had already passed over my desk and in my opinion is even better than the bouncing balls spot. On viewing all selections though the Dove spot from Ogilvy in Toronto gave me pause for second thoughts. But in the end it remained second to Sony Bravia..simply inspired.

The print selection wasn’t as straight forward as the TV this week. Having said that, there was an obvious champion in Stella Artois. A highly ambitious piece of structural engineering with the effect of adding prestige and engagement to a well developed global brand.
